Up Close & Personal with Hlomla Dandala aka Zweli from The River

Hlomla Dandala is a South African actor who currently plays the role of Zweli on The River, he is also a television presenter and director. Many recognize him as  Jacob Makhubu from the thriller, ‘Jacob’s Cross. Hlomla Dandala also gained fame for playing Derek Nyathi in the South African soap opera, ‘Isidingo’. Hlomla Dandalala was born on the  22nd of September 1974 in  Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It’s a small town where most dreams just die as people grow old without getting chances to shine. Hlomla was born to a perfect gentleman named Mvume Dandala. He is the firstborn and is followed by a sister known as Gqibelo. In search of greener pastures, Hlomla moved to Johannesburg where he made a name for himself and now, he is an internationally acclaimed actor.

Most people could tell Hlomla Dandalala was going to be a star one day. His confidence and commitment to all high school activities revealed his unique personality. Hlomla began acting in high school and received positive comments which encouraged him to pursue acting. Later on, he enrolled himself at Wits University studying drama. This move enabled him to fully utilize his God-given acting talent and to date, he is one of the most adored male South African actors.

Hlomla Dandala made his television debut as early as 1995, in the reality show titled, ‘Channel O’. Afterwards, he took off to play the role of Kingsley Siseko Langa in the much-loved soapie, Scandal! on e.tv where he gained much fame. Thereafter, he rose to prominence and became one of the most sought after male actors in Mzansi.

The good-looking Hlomla loves conjuring Instagram and Twitter storms. In early 2019, he heatedly argued with Pamela Nomvete over xenophobia in South Africa. He also attacked Chris Chameleon for criticizing Danny K’s assertion that white people were targeted in xenophobic attacks. In early 2020, Dandala was at it again, he accused his new wife of cheating on him in their house with their kids inside. A Twitter storm was brewed and when he could no longer take the heat he deleted his Twitter account.


Hlomla Dandala was married to Brenda Dandala who is also a television presenter. The charming actor had previously been married to Candy Litchfield and when rumors that Hlomla had children out of wedlock, they separated. However, Hlomla maintains that he had children after they got divorced. To date, Hlomla has five children who include  Ziyanda, Tao, and Sam Dandala.

In the award-winning Telenovela, ‘The River’,  Hlomla Dandala portrays the character of  Zweli Dikana, a police commissioner who is married to a powerful mining mogul Lindiwe played by the famous actress Sindi Dlathu. This attention-grabbing series is set at the Backdrop of the South African Mining Sector. The discovery of a diamond in river that runs between the Affluent neighborhood of Silver lakes and the poor neighborhood of Refilwe, turns the river into a curse due to non-ending conflict.
