Getting to know Dimpho from TheRiver

Matshepo Sekgopi, who played Dimpho in The River, is 25 years old. She was born in Kagiso, West Rand, on November 18th, 1996. 

She started dipping her feet in the world of creative arts and drama in her childhood years when she began with beauty pageants. This gave her much-needed exposure to the world of arts and performance.

Although she looks more mature than her age, the 25-year-old actress still has a long way to go in pursuing a highly successful acting career. She enjoys putting up her unique acting skill on the center stage and works hard to be ranked among the best in the film industry.


Sekgopi, got inclined to music at a younger age while playing her trade in acting. She followed up her passion by enrolling at the Soul Candi Institute of Music after completing her high school education in Johannesburg.

There, she studied disc jockeying course. Unfortunately, she didn’t collect her certificate after completing the course. Though she finds the ability to fuse songs fun, Matshepo is yet to display her disc jockeying talent and hopes to put the skill into use one day.


Following her participation in beauty pageants, Matshepo Sekgopi’s eyes were opened to the opportunities in the world of arts. Her parents supported her career choice and got her an agent who helped her land auditions for a TV role.

She attended several auditions, and nothing showed up. Eventually, she lost hope of landing an acting gig or voiceovers; nevertheless, she never quit auditioning. In her low moments, she got an unexpected call from Bomb Productions notifying her that she had secured the role of Zingi in the SABC 1 series, Show Buddyz.

And that was the beginning of her rise to stardom. Matshepo got vast compliments for her acting skills and subsequently won more roles. Thus far, She has featured in series such as Zone 14, Isibaya, A Place Called Home, Sokhulu & Partners, Ingoma, Saints and Sinners, and Crimes Uncovered.


Since making a name for herself with her portrayals in The River, Matshepo Sekgopi has risen to become one of the most promising talents in the South African entertainment industry. She joined the cast of the award-winning telenovela in 2018 and was faced with the challenge of matching up with the level of professionalism shown by the renowned actors in the show.


Dimpho Mokoena eventually became Matshepo’s breakout role, making her a fan favorite. She featured in the 1Magic drama series alongside hugely talented actors such as Moshidi Motshegwa, Hlomla Dandala, and Presley Chweneyagae.

Having played the role of Dimpho with precision, the actress emerged as one of The River‘s stars and was featured in the five seasons of the hit series. She played Itumeleng’s younger sister, and her character was into inappropriate relationships in the TV series.
